Let’s Protect and Honor Mimbres Peaks With a National Monument Designation
By Raymond Trejo, Luna County Commisioner, New Mexico Wildlife Federation’s Southern New Mexico Outreach Coordinator, and HECHO HCLC member.
As a native New Mexican, I have always felt blessed by our state's natural wonders—no wonder it is known as the Land of Enchantment. As an avid sportsman and having been involved in conservation efforts most of my life, I am also aware of the increased threats that many of these incredible public lands face today, and action needs to be taken to protect them permanently for generations to come.
Its rugged landscapes, diverse wildlife, rich history, and cultural treasures make Mimbres Peaks, which includes four mountain ranges that surround Deming, New Mexico, a prime candidate for national monument designation.
That's why HECHO proudly joined the movement to make this a reality by protecting approximately 245,000 acres in an area that contains documented cultural and historic sites that continue to hold importance to Tribes and Pueblos.
Mimbres Peaks is rich with archaeological sites—including remnants of ancient Native American civilizations—that offer invaluable insights into the region's history and heritage. Safeguarding this landscape and these irreplaceable cultural treasures honors the legacy of the Indigenous peoples, the first stewards of the lands.
This stunning landscape also offers unparalleled recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking and camping to hunting and birdwatching, the area provides a natural playground for various activities, including hunting, hiking, biking, camping, picnicking, and more. A national monument designation will enhance visitors' experience by preserving scenic landscapes, promoting sustainable tourism, and providing educational opportunities, allowing everyone to learn about the area's natural and cultural heritage.
A Mimbres Peaks national monument would not only preserve our heritage but also boost the local economy through increased tourism, create jobs, and foster a sense of pride and stewardship among residents. Recent designations have delivered significant economic benefits for New Mexico communities, according to economic analysis of the Organ Mountain Desert Peaks National Monument. Now it's time to bring this economic boost to Luna County with a monument for the Floridas, Tres Hermanas, Cooks Peak and Good Site mountains that span this area.
Support the protection of this landscape by signing this petition to bring a national monument to Mimbres Peaks.
