Statement: Accountability for George Floyd

Today we have seen accountability prevail in the case of George Floyd, and we applaud the jury’s verdict that ex-officer Derek Chauvin is guilty of murder and manslaughter on all counts. For too long, our justice system has failed the Black community, and though the verdict will not bring George Floyd back, we hope that it offers the Floyd family an opportunity to heal. There is still much work to do in the ongoing fight against racism, and in dismantling the systems that continue to allow the murder of Black community members. Just a few weeks ago, Daunte Wright was unjustly murdered after being pulled over in Minnesota, miles away from where the Chauvin trial was taking place.

HECHO is committed to breaking down systems that uphold violence against Black community members, and is in solidarity today and every day with the Black community. HECHO stands by the strong belief that Black lives matter.
