Op-ed: State’s Public Lands Must Not Be a Casualty of Housing Solutions

This piece originally appeared as an op-ed in the on Las Vegas Sun on March 24, 2025.

Nevada Governor Lombardo has recently urged the State Legislature to pass a resolution advocating for the immediate and systematic release of federal land in Nevada to tackle the housing crisis in the state.

However, many Nevadans and voters across the West prefer to see more housing developed within or near existing communities rather than in natural areas. A recent poll revealed that 75% of Nevadans want to keep natural spaces untouched.

“All levels of government need to work in unison to develop proper zoning, density, and incentives to stimulate affordable housing development in the right places. This can all be done while preserving open spaces that create the quality of life those of us in the West seek and deserve,” wrote Jose Witt, HECHO Advisory Board member, in an op-ed published by Las Vegas Sun.
