History was made today as we watched the inauguration of President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, our nation’s first woman, and woman of color to take office as VP.
In 2021, Americans turned out in record numbers despite a global pandemic, high unemployment, and social unrest to cast their ballots in support of President Biden and Vice President Harris, marking a new opportunity to unite our country in a fair and equitable manner.
After what many have witnessed to be a turbulent transition of power, the new administration must enact solutions addressing the deep divide facing our nation, tackling oppressions like racism, sexism and xenophobia, and take action to undo the dangerous rollbacks enacted by the Trump administration that removed critical air and water protections, and threatened public lands and natural resources. The Biden administration has a significant amount of work ahead -- but together, we can shape a future that is equitable and just, safe and viable for all.
2021 will indeed be a barrier breaking year, as Vice President Harris takes office, the first woman and woman of color to be elected to the vice presidency – inspiring young girls everywhere to lead. Vice President Harris makes history and sends a message of hope to women of color, now providing a reality that women can aspire to. A child to immigrant parents herself, she represents the story of so many Americans. A symbol for the progress that is yet to come, we eagerly look ahead.
We look forward to this new opportunity under the new administration to center equity and inclusion, where we may continue to build a legacy of stewardship, advocating for the protection of our nation’s prized public lands.
