Statement: A Record Year for Voter Registration and Turnout, HECHO Congratulates President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris
HECHO is proud of the work that took place across the country to encourage communities to vote in what was a landmark year for voter turnout. We congratulate President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris, and look forward to advancing opportunities to build connection to our nation’s precious landscapes, advocating for access to public lands, climate change solutions, environmental justice, and more.
The impact of the Latino vote was evident in states like Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas, where despite the chaos brought on by what has been a notably difficult year, Latinos made our mark as a voting force. In fact, Latinos turned out in record numbers across the nation, doubling from under 4 million votes in 2016, to over 8 million in 2020.
These striking numbers prove what HECHO has known from the get-go. That our opinions, experiences, and stories matter, and must continue to be amplified to build upon a future that honors our traditions and values our cultural connections, especially as it relates to the outdoors. We are determined to continuing our work that elevates the voices of nuestra comunidad, and eagerly anticipate the new accomplishments that the next four years will bring.
